Postcards to Phillip Barnhart

I.

un petit Parisian
adventure in the days

before the war,
love less like
Rick & Ilsa

– & more like
Jane & Paul

II.

barzakh
the Arabs call
“the isthmus between,”

two bodies meeting,
as different waters in
the ocean do,

each part stays
separate, holding
its essence

III.

along for the ride

an impromptu trip
across state lines

to taste the unknown,
hamburgers grown

where grass is greener,

the rental car ran
low on gas – only

enough fuel to get
us half the way home

– we’ll always have Cheyenne

in a borrowed car
we could travel together

no further than that
