Down at the end of the road there was for many years a pineapple canning factory. Workers cut up the pineapples and the cores were dumped en masse in the fields near the family house. The smell of pineapple scented the air of Ching Shui. The local children, poor kids of farmers, would pick up the pineapple cores and gnaw whatever meat was left on them. Grandmother used to tell the kids that if they ate these throwaway parts they would go mute so that they would be afraid. Years later, the pineapple cores disappeared from the fields when the factories discovered that they could make use of these parts, by squeezing the cores to make and can juice. Likewise for many years, metal bits of scrap were dumped in the fields until recycling was put into practice.
