Categories that are questionable- by the academy's standards one is defined as an "emerging artist" until having a major museum show. After 10 years of solo exhibitions, you might progress to a "mid-career" artist but still be "emerging". Who makes up these definitions? And what would be the equivalent for a word artist? When a visual artist is up for their 5 year tenure review, they need to have had a major museum show to be approved for tenure. Who helps the artist in getting that show? Certainly not the gallery that represents them - this is all the extracurricular work of the artist. But who teaches them these skills in graduate school? If museums plan their calendars 1-2 years out, that means that if you are in your 2nd year of teaching, you need to send out proposals to museums, most likely university and regional collections, marketing your work well in advance of your 4th/5th year. This to me sounds like an extraordinary amount of stress that combined with teaching, would make the production of new work almost prohibitive.
