I am not ready to let go
like the dumb dog
that bounds up
the mountaintop
for her master
plays fetch
in the desert dune
in 110º heat
drops dead
from devotion,
not knowing
her own impermanence
I too close out
the noise of my own
thumping heart
the narrowing of my lungs
waiting for that moment –
you say “when”
